Frequently Asked Questions
Wasn't this where tinkers workshop was once located?
Yes.  However, we are now a completely new nonprofit organization that has picked up the tinker's lease to the property at 82-84 Bolivar Drive.  We are Waterside Workshops;  a merry band of new faces and former tinker staff that are dedicated to strengthening the Berkeley community through teaching skills and crafts, such as our programs: Bike Repair, Sewing, and Boatbuilding.

Do you guys want an old lawnmower?
While we do love donations we have to be picky about what we take. After all we are limited in storage space and don't want to get cluttered...... again.  The best way to decide if your item or items would be useful for WW is to check our Things We Need section. If this still doesn't answer your question than Contact Us directly.

What is Street Level Cycles anyway?

Quite simply Street Level Cycles is a name given to Waterside Workshops' bicycle program so we can have a cooler name than just " the bike program".

So can I come down there and build a bike?
Street level cycles offers a couple of options to do just this. We have a stock pile of used bicycle frames and parts just waiting for someone to come along and give them life once again. While we can not give you a free bike just for showing up, we can offer you the free use of our tools and very reasonable prices on used parts. For more information check out our Street Level Cycles page.

When can I come to test ride or purchase one of your used bikes?
During Street Level Cycles' Open Lab hours Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 2-6 PM bikes can Be checked out for a test ride. Bring an I.D. card or something of value to take a bike out for a spin on Berkeley's scenic Aquatic Park. If the rider is under 18 years of age CA state law requires them to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle. Test helmets will be provided by SLC.
